International Cycling Competition Ends with Success

The outcome: More than 600,000 kilometers cycled and 7,000 newly planted trees for our corporate forest in Nicaragua.

The second edition of the Gebrüder Weiss campaign “Cycling around the World” came to a successful conclusion at the end of September. For six months, cyclists from all over the world hopped on their bikes and used a cycling app to record and add up the distances covered. The goal was to circle the globe seven times, a distance of 280,525 kilometers, with Gebrüder Weiss financing a new tree planting for every 40 kilometers ridden. This year we met our ambitious target yet again, resulting in the planting of 7,000 new saplings in Nicaragua.

Around the World Together

The success of our cycling campaign is based on the dedicated efforts of 650 cyclists from around the world. From tandem rides in Hungary to team cycling tours in Guangdong, these images of our participants illustrate that sustainable transportation is not only environmentally friendly but also great fun, and together we can make a big difference!

In addition to making a positive impact on our climate, participants had the chance to win great prizes. Over a total of seven challenges, a variety of prizes were awarded, ranging from bicycle bells to a top-quality gravel bike.

Vienna to Mumbai and Back

That’s roughly 17,000 kilometers overland – and the distance both Janusz Mucha (nickname: Yankooo) and Markus Knabl (nickname: mkn10) covered as part of the “Cycling around the World” competition.

After an intense neck-and-neck race, the two leaders decided to agree on a draw, securing a shared first place in the individual competition. It was a sportsmanlike gesture of respect and appreciation, perfectly in keeping with the community spirit of “Cycling around the World”.

Reforestation in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is one of the countries most affected by the climate crisis. While reforestation projects seek to mitigate the effects of floods and droughts, sustainable management of these new forests also creates additional sources of income, improving the livelihoods of farmers.

To actively contribute to climate protection, we are planting trees in Nicaragua for every 40 kilometers cycled in cooperation with PRIMAKLIMA. With the completion of this year's cycling campaign, the company's forest area now contains 7,000 new trees.
